Submission Process Overview

Each manuscript will be peer-reviewed.  Peer review follows the single-blind model, i.e. the reviewers are anonymous, but the authors are disclosed to the reviewers.  Manuscripts are evaluated according to the following criteria: material is original and timely, writing is clear, study methods are appropriate, data are valid, conclusions are reasonable and supported by the data, information is important, and topic is interesting.   Manuscripts may be rejected. The intent is to publish quality work and the reviewers are instructed to help authors get their manuscripts published and be liberal in their acceptance policy.   If necessary, the manuscript will be returned to the author(s) for revision(s) prior to a final decision. Revisions: After receiving a decision from the Facilitator in Chief or an Associate Facilitator and revising the manuscript as instructed, the final revision should include: a cover letter explaining revisions based on Facilitators comments, the final/revised manuscript and accompanying files. Proofs: Once your article is accepted for publication, galley proofs will be sent via e-mail to the corresponding author for correction prior to publication.  Missouri Health endorses the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly work in Medical Journals

Article Types

The following categories of submissions will be accepted.

Original Research Article

An original research article is a comprehensive and detailed document that presents the findings of a unique study or investigation conducted by the authors. These articles typically follow the scientific method and include retrospective, prospective, interventional, observational, natural history, case series, or basic science discovery research. Original research articles contribute new insights, knowledge, or evidence pertinent to any field within medicine or health.

Review Article

Review articles provide a synthesis and analysis of existing research and literature on a specific topic. Includes both systematic reviews and meta-analyses that critically evaluate and summarize the state of knowledge, theories, methodologies, and trends within the fields of medicine and health.

Case Report

A case report surrounds a single rare or interesting case that provides clinicians with insights into unusual presentations, diagnostic challenges, or innovative therapeutic approaches. The case report should include a review of past relevant cases, detailed description of a single patient's medical history, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome, and implications within clinical practice, teaching, and research.

Perspective/Commentary

A perspective piece presents a personal point of view regarding the current thinking on a particular health-related topic. A commentary piece more specifically presents an opinion on a previously published study, article, report, book, or other published work. Perspective and commentary pieces aim to promote further discussion on the topic and should include evidence to support the author’s point of view.

Clinical Image/Media

Clinical images include photographs of interesting visual findings that are related to the fields of medicine or health. Includes but is not limited to unique dermatologic findings, gross pathologic findings, histopathologic findings, and imaging studies. Health-related videos, illustrations, and auditory findings may also be accepted if they provide novel educational value. All images and media must be accompanied by a written description.

Abstract

Abstracts are short summaries of longer works, such as original research, reviews, and reports. They provide a synopsis of the objectives and the outcomes of the work, and they must include the following sections: introduction, methods, results, and conclusion. Abstracts for working papers may be considered for publication if the full text is not yet complete.
