Abstract

This article explores the challenges students face when trying to make healthy food choices at the Mizzou Markets on the University of Missouri campus. Despite being a convenient resource for snacks and groceries, the Markets fall short in offering affordable, fresh, and diverse healthy options. Key issues include the poor quality and rapid spoilage of fresh fruit due to inadequate storage, high prices for pre-cut fruit, and limited hours of operation—especially in the evenings when students are most likely to need access. These barriers discourage students from maintaining nutritious diets, especially when cheaper, unhealthier alternatives are readily available. The article suggests several solutions, including refrigerating perishable items, lowering prices on healthy foods, and extending store hours. Addressing these concerns would support students’ physical and mental well-being and better align with their health goals.
