Raw Materials: Analyzing Linguistic Codes as Methods of Expression

Authors

  • Janine Ruszkowski University of Missouri

Abstract

In this research paper, the author examines the phenomenon of "code switching" as a form of self-expression. The author seeks to present code switching as a valid and necessary part of communication that does not require the speaker to fully censor themselves. Interviews with a South Korean international student and the author's Chicagoan father are used to highlight the prevalence of code switching across cultures.
